Pre- Domesday Book
The name Hethersett is probably of Saxon origins and is likely to mean a camp or enclosure on the heath or an enclosure for deer,
There is evidence, however, of earlier settlers with a considerable amount of Roman pottery and artefacts being found in the northern part of the village.
A Stone Age long barrow (burial mound) has been found in Cantley close to what is now Hethersett.
Timeline:

43-410 AD - Roman Britain
410-1066 - Saxon Britain
